Betting: Harry Redknapp favourite for England job, but Tottenham title charge represents stumbling block
Following the news of Fabio Capello's resignation, the Spurs boss has been made the unassailable front-runner, but current No. 2 Stuart Pearce represents good value in the market
Unsurprinsingly Harry Redknapp leads the way at 4/9 with William Hill to be the next permanent England manager, but with Tottenham riding the crest of a Premier League wave at the moment, would he be willing to throw in the towel at White Hart Lane to answer the FA's call?
The 64-year-old was full of praise for the club and their
fans when he left court yesterday and although many punters believe he is the man to lead England next, the immediate nature of a replacement being required could prove a stumbling block.
The logical second choice could be current England Under-21 manager Stuart Pearce, who worked closely with Capello and is available at 7/1 with Hills to be the next manager of his country, while West Brom boss Roy Hodgson is available at 10/1 with the same firm.
Then follows a bank of candidates who do not fit the FA's desired scenario of being English, but who could be brought into contention following Capello's shock departure. Jose Mourinho is available at 10/1 and Guus Hiddink, who has a strong CV of international management including spells at Russia, Turkey and Australia behind him at 11/1.
If the FA are to approach a manager that is currently unattached then Rafa Benitez (16/1) or Gareth Southgate (20/1) could enter the fray as left field candidates.
Back Harry Redknapp to be the next permanent England manager with William Hill at 4/9
Or back Stuart Pearce to get the nod at 7/1
