Bayern Munich will visit Stuttgart on Wednesday aiming to keep their treble hopes alive in the quarter final of the DFB Cup.
Jupp Heynckes’ team began the season with respected commentators suggesting this was one of Bayern’s greatest ever sides as they plundered 25 goals without reply in an eight-game Bundesliga run in the autumn.
A stutter or two since then and the debate now seems to have been scaled back to a question of whether this Bayern side are as good as the defending German champions Borussia Dortmund. The Bavarians can be backed at 11/20 (1.55) with Bet365 to beat Stuttgart in this one.
Stuttgart for their part are on a rotten run of form which contrasts their off-field stability. General manager Fredi Bobic has just been handed a new contract until 2017 as a show of faith in his ability to run team affairs.
But on the field, things are looking bleak – Stuttgart have not won in seven and only ended a run of four straight defeats with a draw at Leverkusen last time out. In the league fixture between these sides in December, Bayern won 2-1 so there may not seem much to encourage the hosts.
However, the price of 5/1 (6.0) with Bet365 for a Stuttgart victory still represents the value bet here. Home wins over top-eight sides such as Schalke, Hannover and Hoffenheim show that this team can perform well in front of their own fans and the cup is likely to be more of a priority for Stuttgart than Bayern, for whom the Champions League returns later this month.
As for the bet of the day, it has to be both teams to score at 8/11 (1.73) with Bet365.
Stuttgart, for all their struggles, have still netted in 13 of their last 16 Bundesliga games and if they are to get joy against Bayern it will surely be when Heynckes’ men are on the road – Bayern have conceded 79% of their league goals away from the Allianz Arena.
Of course, the visitors are also good for a goal having scored at least once in 90% of their away games, and so the smart money is on both teams to score in this one at a solid price.
