Birmingham City will relish the chance to give a reminder to their Wolverhampton neighbours that they are still a force to be reckoned with when the two sides do battle in this FA Cup third round tie at St Andrew's. Mick McCarthy’s Wolves could perhaps do without the distraction of the FA Cup as they battle against the prospect of relegation from the Premier League. If they need look at any club to appreciate the dangers of losing focus on the league, they need look no further than their opponents in this game.
Birmingham were on the crest of a wave after winning the League Cup in March but now find themselves lurking outside the play-off places in the Championship following their relegation from England's top flight last season.
However, Chris Hughton’s side do still have games in hand as a result of their European adventures and will still have high hopes of making an instant return to the top flight. If they are to do so, it will rely heavily on their excellent home form. Birmingham remain undefeated at home in their Championship campaign and with the television cameras in attendance they will surely need no extra motivation against local rivals. Given Wolves’ relatively poor record away from Molineux, having not won away in the Premier League since the opening day, the 16/11 (2.45) on offer with SportingBet for a Birmingham win is the bet of the day.
