Sven-Goran Eriksson remains the bookies' favourite at 8/11 (1.73) to succeed Roy Hodgson at Craven Cottage despite a late intervention by current Switzerland boss Ottmar Hitzfeld.

As exclusively revealed by Goal.com UK's Wayne Veysey, Fulham have held talks with the double Champions League-winning coach as Eriksson's wage demands threaten to scupper a potential deal. The Swede, who coached Ivory Coast at the World Cup, had his odds slashed from 9/4 (3.25) to 8/11 (1.73) as news of a possible return to the Premier League filtered through.

Hitzfeld's entry into the race has forced the bookies to have a rethink and they are pricing the German coach at 3/1 (4.0) to be in charge for the start of the season. It is understood that Hitzfeld, who inspired Switzerland to a shock win over Spain in the World Cup, has already met representatives from Fulham and indicated his willingness to manage in the Premier League.

Other contenders include current USA coach Bob Bradley, who is presently trading at 6/1 (7.0). The American could improve his present salary considerably and his stock has risen after a decent World Cup. Former candidates Alan Curbishley, Mark Hughes, Tony Mowbray and Glenn Hoddle are understood to be out of the running.

Fulham are keen to have a new manager in place before they depart for their pre-season training regime in Sweden next Monday. The Cottagers are presently 8/1 (9.0) to get relegated next season.

Goal.com's betting and odds expert David Mole says the race for the hot seat remains wide open.

"The betting on the empty seat at Craven Cottage is wide open with no current huge put your house on it favourite. Eriksson is trading well but Hitzfeld and Bob Bradley are hot on his heels in the latest betting market. Hitzfeld would be a safe pair of hands but you have to admit Bradley got the best from an average set of US players including Clint Dempsey. It will be interesting to see how the appointment affects the betting markets on Fulham for relegation, it's not too long ago they looked like dead certs for the Championship."
