Statistics never tell the whole story, but Manchester United can take heart from the numbers ahead of tonight's clash with AC Milan.

The heavyweights meet in the second leg of the Champions League first knockout round with the tie weighted 3-2 in United's favour.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be preparing his team talk to fire up his troops - and should he wish to reel of the stats - here are some pretty positive ones.

328 - Minutes played at Old Trafford against Italian opposition without conceding a goal. Since the 3-2 victory over Milan in April 2007, United have kept clean sheets in three consecutive matches against Roma and Inter Milan.

104 - Matches at Old Trafford in the European Cup and Champions League without losing by a two-goal margin. Milan need to upset the record books to knock the hosts out of the competition.

14 - Since Milan's 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in February 2005, United have registered an aggregate 14-3 scoreline against Italian opposition at the ground. The Rossoneri, Roma and Inter Milan have all been put to the sword in that time.

12 - Number of goals Wayne Rooney has scored in his last 10 appearances. After shaking off a knee injury, he will be looking to extend this scoring streak this evening.

5 - Number of goals United have let in at home in Europe this term. In three matches played, this keeps the average below the level Milan require.

1 - Average goals conceded per game this season when Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have been partnered together. Milan need to at least double this to stand any chance of progressing.

0 - Number of times United have been eliminated in Europe after winning an away first leg. The 3-2 victory at the San Siro has put the Premier League outfit in pole position.

But here are a few statistics that show AC Milan could cause an upset...

7 - Number of times Milan have lifted the European Cup/Champions League. This more than doubles United's figure of three wins and proves the Italians' pedigree.

4 - Number of times Milan have drawn United in Europe and been victorious over two legs. The Red Devils have never prevailed against the Rossoneri in a double-header before.

2 - Number of goals Milan scored on their last trip to Old Trafford. The 3-2 defeat in 2007 proves they have the capacity to get on the scoresheet.

...and for those who feel that AC Milan are a team of ageing superstars who will be run ragged by Manchester United's young charges - think again

28.8 - is the average age of the expected AC Milan starting XI.
