Higdon attended the official after-party at the Corinthian Club in Glasgow following the award presentation and is understood to have been involved in an altercation with security staff outside the venue.
The former St Mirren forward had been due to meet media on Monday morning but was only released from custody at 09:00 having spent the night in a cell.
"A 29-year-old man is the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal in connection with an alleged assault at a nightclub in Ingram Street in Glasgow at 1.25am today," a Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed.
Hibernian striker Leigh Griffiths, Inverness CT midfielder Andrew Shinnie and Aberdeen forward Niall McGinn were also nominated for the honour voted upon by the country's players.
