David Weir is set to leave Rangers after agreeing to terminate his contract with the club - but plans to continue his playing career.

The 41-year-old moved to Ibrox from Everton in 2007, and has won three titles in his time with the SPL giants, making more than 120 appearances in the process.

He has recently slipped down the pecking order in Ally McCoists’ squad and, having considered his options, has decided to leave the club in order to continue playing elsewhere.

"It will be an emotional week because it's the end of five years for me at Rangers, five years I have loved," Weir told reporters. "I'm not sad about it, I'm happy that I got the opportunity to play for such a great club.

"During my time here I have got to play with fantastic players and work with great coaches and on top of that we achieved a lot.

"I have so many memories to look back on and I am very proud of that, I wouldn't change it for the world. But it's not been a difficult decision. If anything I probably prolonged it.

"I could have left at the end of last season along with Walter and that would have been a natural end to it. But I still want to play and even now I still want to play."

Weir has made nearly 600 appearances for Falkirk, Hearts, Everton and Rangers, as well as being capped 69 times for Scotland in a distinguished career in the game.
