Hibernian manager John Hughes has praised Derek Riordan's performance in his side's 2-1 defeat to Celtic at Parkhead on Saturday.

The former Hoops man scored a wonder goal from outside the box but it wasn’t enough to rescue a point against Neil Lennon’s side.

Hughes told BBC Sport: "Derek’s the only person on that pitch who has that technique and execution to apply that finish. But he put a shift in as well."

When asked if he felt Riordan could soon get a call-up from Scotland manager Craig Levein, Hughes added: "That’s for Craig Levein to decide. He’s certainly got the talent, you just need to know how to motivate him."

Despite the defeat, Hughes was pleased with his side's performance and blamed conceding early in both halves as what stopped Hibs getting more from the game.

"It was a great effort," he added. "I think we could have got at them a bit more in the second half but we passed it really well. I felt for the boys not to take anything away from Parkhead."

"The quality of the first half was part of a game plan. You need to keep this place quiet for 20 minutes. I’ve been here and the fans get nervous so to concede so early in the second half from a set piece was disappointing."
