Alan Gow could make his debut for Motherwell against St Johnstone on Saturday despite a lack of match fitness.

Manager Craig Brown said that the former Falkirk and Rangers forward trained on his own throughout the summer until joining Motherwell last Wednesday as a free agent.

But he impressed Brown with both his fitness and his form in a behind-closed-doors match against Clyde on Monday, which Motherwell won 1-0.

Brown said: "I will be honest and say if we started him, and we may do, it would be quite an achievement if he lasted 90 minutes because he hasn't played for some time.

"But we had a closed-doors match midweek against Clyde and he played very well. So he is in contention.

"In training I can see what the attraction is to many clubs. He is a hugely talented player with wonderful close control, great skill, good vision.

"The only question mark is his match-fitness and we will see how he reacts after training on Friday."

The versatile frontman struggled to make a major impact on loan at Hibernian earlier this year and has until January to show Brown he is worth a longer deal.
