Russian side Spartak Moscow refuse to give up their pursuit of Celtic’s winger Aiden McGeady and are reported to have met Celtic officials in Glasgow to thrash out an £8 million deal, according to The Guardian.
McGeady is apparently reluctant to make the move to Russia because of fears over the drastic change in lifestyle that such a switch would involve.
But the Republic of Ireland international is desperate to test himself at a higher level and Spartak’s technical director, Evgeniy Smolencev, believes that he can capitalise on this wish before he heads back to Russia.
Another positive for the Russian club is that McGeady wasn’t included in the Scottish side’s line-up for their Champions League qualifier against Braga, which means he remains eligible to play for another club in Europe this season.
It is thought that Spartak have verbally offered the Glasgow club £8m, but negotiations are set to become more formal with a written offer as Spartak’s interest in the player hardens.
McGeady is also wanted by his former manager Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa, a move which he would be much happier with; however, the only hitch is that Villa don’t have sufficient funds until their midfielder James Milner’s proposed transfer to Manchester City is completed.
