Rangers’ prodigy John Fleck has distanced himself from comparisons with fellow wonderkid Wayne Rooney.

The Scottish midfielder made his senior debut as a 16-year-old in 2008, an appearance which made him the youngest player to play for the Scottish giants since 1983.

Now 18, the son of former Rangers player Robert, is looking forward to the new club season and attempting to become a regular fixture in Walter Smith’s championship-winning side, although the youngster is keen to end any parallels drawn to the career of Rooney.

Speaking to the press at the launch of Rangers’ new kit, Fleck said: "I'm still a young boy and I think people expected me just to come out and be like Wayne Rooney every week but that's not going to happen.

"He's a world-class player and it takes time for a young boy to come through. I'm willing to be patient but hopefully I'll get my chance.”

The youngster rejected the notion that this coming season would be pivotal to his career and explained that he is willing to bide his time if necessary.

"I've been involved for the last couple of years now, coming off the bench and things like that, so hopefully this will be the season for me," he noted.

"I wouldn't say it's a make or break season. I'm still young and hopefully I can just play as much as possible.

"I'm not saying I'm going to play every week or anything but if I'm doing well at training, the manager will make his choices.

"If I play, then great. If I don't, I just need to keep working hard," Fleck concluded.

Fleck signed a three-year deal with the Glasgow club in March, a move which ended immediate speculation regarding a move to the Premier League.
