The Serbia midfielder insists his side should have won a trophy this year, as a disastrous final three weeks of the term left them empty handed

Nemanja Matic believes Benfica's performances this season merited them winning a trophy, despite a dismal conclusion to the campaign.

The Eagles were on course for the treble, but having lost out on both the league and the Europa League, their nightmare end to the season culminated in a 2-1 defeat to Vitoria Guimaraes in the Taca de Portugal final on Sunday, where they conceded two goals in the final minutes of the match.

“I don't know what happened in the last 10 minutes,” Matic said to reporters after the match.

“We surely deserved to win something this season.”

Oscar Cardozo reached breaking point in the loss. The Paraguay striker let his frustration get the better of him after the final whistle, exchanging words and eventually shoving coach Jorge Jesus.

He apologised to his team-mates for the exchange, but will likely be subject to discipline by the club.

However, it was a day of celebration for Guimaraes who won their first ever Portuguese Cup.

“We made history. So many don’t know Guimaraes, even some Portuguese don’t understand what we are all about. Now, they will,” coach Rui Vitoria told reporters.
