The Russian prime minister has praised the Fifa leader on his re-election despite the corruption controversy surrounding football's governing body

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has sent a congratulatory telegram to Sepp Blatter after his re-election as Fifa president.

Football's governing body has been hit by a storm of controversy in recent weeks with rumours of corruption in Fifa rife.

Blatter was elected unopposed as Fifa president for his fourth consecutive term on Wednesday in Zurich, after Mohamed Bin Hamma dropped out while under investigation for bribery, while Blatter was himself cleared of cimilar allegations.

Putin told Russian reporters on Thursday that Blatter's re-election shows that he is a "high global authority" and that the Swiss president will continue to "selflessly serve this significant form of sport".

The two men have become close since Fifa awarded Russia the World Cup in 2018, beating off rival bids from Spain, England, Portugal and Netherlands-Belgium in the process.
