Adam Johnson: Last season’s FA Cup success can inspire Manchester City to League Cup victory over Liverpool

The winger has revealed the Citizens are 'quietly confident' of overturning a 1-0 deficit at Anfield on Wednesday, with a Wembley final against Cardiff in the offing

Adam Johnson believes the experience of winning the FA Cup last season will help Manchester City overcome Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final second leg on Wednesday.

City lost 1-0 at home in the first match but have the chance to overturn that deficit and make their second successive Wembley appearance after they defeated Stoke City 1-0 in May's Cup final.

And Johnson believes that winning mentality can inspire the Citizens to come from behind and secure a meeting with Cardiff City in February's final.

"When you have won something you shouldn't just be content with that. It should drive you on even more," he told reporters.

"That's why you see the top players walk away with so many medals at the end of their careers.

"I don't want to be happy just because I have an FA Cup medal. Even if we win the Premier League, I will strive for more.

"With the players we have, we want to do it again and again. That is the mentality we are developing."

City go into the match top of the Premier League whilst Liverpool have slipped to seventh, but Johnson insists that for once the pressure will not be on his side to win the game.

"It's a tricky one for them. Do they try to attack us or try to defend against our quality players for 90 minutes?” he said.

"The thing is no matter who we play, we will create chances at some point. We beat them 3-0 at home, so we can score against them.

"No-one is expecting us to go through so the pressure is off for once and we can go there with freedom, play our football and have a go.

"It won't be easy but we are quietly confident."
