Liverpool defender Jose Enrique is eagerly anticipating his side’s League Cup semi-final against Manchester City, suggesting the match may take on the atmosphere of a big European clash.

The two-legged affair begins on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium and the Spaniard is particularly looking forward to the second leg, which is played at Anfield on January 25.

“I am very excited,” Enrique told the club’s official magazine. “Especially with the atmosphere at Anfield for the second leg.

“All of the players speak of the European atmosphere. With the importance of this game, it could be the same.”

The two sides last met just over a week ago, with Roberto Mancini’s table-toppers routing Kenny Dalglish’s men 3-0, but the left-back feels that the Reds were unlucky not to pick up a point from the match.

“I think the game will be different to the league match, when we were a little bit unlucky anyway,” he insisted.

“I’m not saying we deserved to win the game, but on another day a draw would have been fair.

“We kept the ball nicely but couldn’t score. That has happened a few times this season so we are trying to improve.”

The winners of the tie will play either Crystal Palace or Cardiff City, with the south London side securing a 1-0 victory in the first leg at Selhurst Park on Tuesday.
