Wolves manager Mick McCarthy says he 'can't fault' his side despite 5-2 loss to Manchester City

Mick McCarthy has admitted he is far from dismayed by Wolves' performance in the League Cup on Wednesday evening, despite losing 5-2 against Manchester City.

McCarthy's side took an early lead before capitulating to City, with goals from Johnson, Nasri and Dzeko adding to a De Vries own-goal as the Molineux side crashed out of the competition.

The Wolves' boss has been the target of criticism by supporters recently, but the former Irish international had nothing but praise for his team and the fans.

McCarthy told Sky Sports: “I’m certainly not down by the way we played.  I’m not sure we expected to turn Man city over. But we had a right good go.

“I can't fault us in recent weeks. We didn’t do anything wrong [tonight], it was a fabulous finish the first one. Second one, [Samir] Nasri got inside of [Matt] Doherty, but I thought he [Doherty] was great.

“I think looking at the performance, there were some good performances from my players. It should have been 3-2 at half time.”

Asked whether the crowd were less hostile than on Wednesday night, McCarthy said: “It’s been like that for most of the time. You know my thoughts from Saturday and I still feel that way.

"The fans have been fantastic to me for five years. I’ve said my bit and I’m finished on that. The squad were terrific tonight with the supporters.”
