Hartlepool 0-3 Wigan

After a record worst start in Premier League history, Roberto Martinez's side bounced back to record an impressive 3-0 victory over Hartlepool at Victoria Park in the League Cup.

Things were made a lot easier for the Latics after the hosts gifted them an own-goal courtesy of Sam Collins putting through his own net with less than five minutes on the clock. In the second half, Martinez's side put a bad last few days behind them with two further strikes from Jordi Gomez and Victor Moses.

Wigan: Al Habsi, Alcaraz, Caldwell, Boyce, Figueroa, Thomas, Watson, Gomez, McArthur, Boselli, Rodallega.

Leyton Orient 0-2 West Bromwich

Meanwhile, Roberto Di Matteo's side had just enough quality to brush aside Leyton Orient 2-0 at Brisbane Road.

Ibanez Pablo
put the Baggies in front in the first half with a poachers header inside the box. The Premier League side struggled thereafter to break down the O's until a late goal from Chris Wood sealed the deal in stoppage time.

West Brom: Myhill, Pablo, Shorey, Zuiverloon, Barnett, Barnes, Reid, Mantom, Bednar, Moore, Cox

Milton Keynes Dons 4-3 Blackpool

Elsewhere, fans inside Stadium:mk were in for a treat as Premier League new boys Blackpool were knocked out 4-3 against MK Dons.

It was all-guns blazing from the whistle in typical English football league fashion with the hosts taking the lead through Sam Baldock in the first minute. Despite a host of chances it wasn't until after half-time until another goal was scored but like London buses, they all arrived at once.

Brett Ormerod put the Seasiders level on the 51st minute only for the Dons to nip back into the lead two minutes later courtesy of a Jermain Easter double to put the hosts into a two-goal lead.

Not to be out-done 'Pool replied thanks to Ludovic Sylvestre on the 57th minute and had to wait until late in the game to snatch a leveller through a penalty after Brett Ormerod was challenged unfairly by Dean Lewington in the box. Charlie Adam stepped up and converted from the spot.

And so the game went into extra-time but in the shock of the night, it was the Dons who would finally come out on top thanks to a Lewis Guy strike.

Blackpool: Halstead, Coid, Eardley, Edwards, Keinan, Basham, Ludovic Sylvestre, Husband, Ormerod, Demontagnac, Barkhuizen

Southampton 0-1 Bolton

Finally, Bolton scraped past Southampton 1-0 at St Mary's Stadium in a tight encounter where both side's defences were on top.

Ivan Klasnic's well-placed finish was enough to secure Wanderers victory on the night as the Saints lacked just enough quality to find an equaliser.

Bolton: Bogdan, Knight, Ricketts, Alonso, O'Brien, Taylor, Gardner, Davies, Klasnic, Blake
