Villas-Boas happy with Bale’s yellow card for diving in Inter victory

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has revealed he would have asked Gareth Bale to get himself booked if he had not already against Inter.

The Welshman gave Spurs the lead in their 3-0 victory over the Italian giants at White Hart Lane, but then picked up a caution for simulation after going down in the box after a challenge from Walter Gargano.

Having also been booked in his side's meetings with Panathanaikos and Maribor earlier this season, the Welshman is now set to serve a one-match suspension.

But Villas-Boas was happy to talk about the issue and has admitted he would have told the 23-year-old to pick up a yellow card anyway as it would give him a clean slate for the last eight.

"Gareth will obviously be a great miss," Villas-Boas said. "But had we known we'd get this result we would have asked him to get the yellow card to be clean and to be ready for the last eight.

"It's not finished but we are in a good position.

"Gareth has been influential in consecutive games but hopefully we can make it without him and go through to the last eight."

Spurs head into the second leg at the San Siro with a commanding 3-0 lead after goals from Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen.
