Roberto Mancini insists that back-up goalkeeper Shay Given will be given a chance to play in Europe with Manchester City now into the Europa League group stage.

Joe Hart, who beat Given out for the starting job, started for the fourth consecutive match ahead of the Republic of Ireland international, keeping a clean sheet in City’s 2-0 victory over Timisoara on Thursday.

The victory earned City a place in the group stage of the Europa League, and with more games in Europe to come Mancini claims that Given could get some more playing time if he stays with the club.

"The goalkeeper is a different situation to all the other players," Mancini told The Mirror.

"But now we are in the group stage, maybe it is possible to give Shay games.

"I'm sorry for Shay but the goalkeeper position is different to the others. He knows that very well. Joe knows this too."

Wayne Rooney, how did you miss?! The Manchester United striker looks certain to grab his hat-trick after picking up possession inside a crowded Liverpool area, but somehow miscues his effort wide of the post. Unbelievable miss.

Couldn’t have summed up the last few minutes better myself, Gregory - so I won’t bother. But it really has been a remarkable capitulation from Liverpool, hasn’t it? While Manchester United did edge the first half, Kenny Dalglish’s side defended well for the most part in the opening 45.

Greg Stobart reports from Old Trafford: “From the hostility and hatred as the players left the pitch at half-time, the atmosphere around the stadium now is one of unconfined joy. The Stretford End is rocking to ‘we shall not be moved’ with the away end silenced by that quickfire Wayne Rooney double. Luis Suarez as spent the last five minutes shaking his head - only he knows about what - and you do wonder just how far his emotions might boil over in the remainder of the game.”
