Motherwell moved into the third qualifying round of the Europa League by beating Breidablik 1-0 at the Kopavogsvollur stadium to secure a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Jamie Murphy’s vital away goal on 42 minutes proved to be decisive after the Icelandic side made a strong start to the match, with Well easing through in what was, by comparison, a low-key second half.

Craig Brown’s side now move through to face Norwegian side Aalesunds, with the first leg away from home on July 29.

Breidablik kept the same starting XI which lost at Fir Park, with Motherwell making one change as Steven Saunders replaced Chris Humphrey.

It was the home side who shaded the opening phase of the match, with captain Kari Arsaelsson heading just wide after five minutes before Gudmundur Petursson’s drive flew just over the crossbar after the visitors failed to deal with a free-kick.

A super block by Saunders then denied Petursson, and things began to turn in Motherwell’s favour when Ross Forbes, the goalscorer in the first leg, wasted a clear chance after being sent through by Keith Lasley and John Sutton.

The crucial goal came shortly before the break, Stephen Craigan’s free-kick being controlled inside the area and slotted past Ingvar Thor Kale by Murphy.

The leaders of the Icelandic league did try to respond after the break, Gudmundur Krisjansson easing past Saunders before lashing a shot into the side netting.

Arsaelsson had a header cleared off the line by Mark Reynolds in the home side’s clearest opportunity of the night, before Well almost killed the game off completely when Forbes struck the post with a 25-yard free-kick.

Breidablik continued to press, but the Scots were able to hold out for a win on the night and the all-important progression to the next stage.
