Sporting Lisbon midfielder Pedro Mendes happy with performance in Everton win
Former Rangers man pleased with vital win...
By Niall McGlone
Miguel Veloso gave Sporting the lead on the night when he was found in space inside the Everton box and he lashed the ball home from close range.
Former Rangers midfielder Mendes added a second when his long range strike found the net via deflection before Matias Fernandez netted in stoppage time.
“We knew we needed this win. We wanted to progress in this competition and I think we performed really well in the first leg,” said Mendes.
“Today we did exactly what the gaffer asked of us; we were patient. We knew we couldn’t concede otherwise it would have been very difficult for us.
“After we scored, of course Everton reacted to that goal, but we scored the second and then the third at the end so it was a very good night for all of us.”
Mendes admitted that it was an important result for the Portuguese side who have come under a lot of criticism after recent performances.
“We needed the performance today, we needed it for the supporters, for the fans, for ourselves, for everyone involved with Sporting, we needed to perform like we did today.”
