Fulham manager Roy Hodgson was delighted with his team’s 2-1 victory in the Europa League last 32 first leg tie against last year's Uefa Cup winners Shakhtar Donetsk.

Zoltan Gera struck early for the home side, but it fell to Bobby Zamora to score a fabulous 25-yard strike to win the match and hand the English side a slender advantage to take to Ukraine next week.

“We started well,” Hodgson told ITV Sport. “Then they [Shakhtar] got their game going,

“They were exceptional at times and maybe we got a bit scared of them.”

With his side under constant pressure going into half-time Hodgson cited a positive interval as a galvanising factor.

“At half-time the players pulled together,” he added.

“We began to pass in a way we can do and it worked well for us.”

Hodgson was full of praise for the visitors, and also of his team’s achievement in overcoming a side that has gathered plenty of European experience in recent seasons..

“They [Shakhtar] are a top quality team,” Hodgson added.

“To win was magnificent scalp. I’m glad we showed our fans we can play against a team like this and get a result.”
