The Chilean opened his account for the Gunners against Besiktas and may need to adapt to a new role quickly due to injuries to both Olivier Giroud and Yaya SanogoPOLL
Alexis Sanchez was Arsenal’s hero on Wednesday night as the Gunners booked a place in the Champions League proper with a victory over Besiktas.
And with the Gunners facing the prospect of a lengthy spell without a recognised striker due to injuries, the onus could be on the Chilean to score the goals that help his new side stay in the hunt for silverware domestically and in Europe.
Much has been made of the possibility of Arsene Wenger deploying Alexis in a central role and the £32 million man struggled against Everton last Saturday before being replaced by Olivier Giroud at half time.
Giroud scored the all-important 90th-minute equaliser which earned Arsenal a point in a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park, but suffered an ankle injury which could now rule him out for months.
Yaya Sanogo, too, is currently carrying a hamstring problem, while Arsenal’s only other option is Joel Campbell, who made his competitive debut for the Gunners against Everton.
With less than a week remaining until the transfer window closes, Wenger looks unlikely to bring in a striker of the required quality to fill the void left by Giroud, who despite the criticism levelled at him, scored 22 goals last season.
After opening his account for Arsenal against Besiktas, can Alexis replace Giroud in the coming months?
Do Arsenal need to sign another striker before the transfer window closes? Or is Alexis the man to fire the Gunners into the Premier League title race and the latter stages of the Champions League?
