David Moyes received a lot of credit after the 1-1 draw in Manchester, and the Red Devils coped with the German champions for about an hour in Germany, but is that good enough?
Manchester United have been knocked out of the Champions League following a spirited performance against Bayern Munich. Or was it so spirited?
United were praised for their battling display in the first leg, in which they earned a 1-1 draw, with many saying they coped with the German champions far better than expected.
But were expectations too low? Should a team of Manchester United's calibre sit back and take punch after punch on their own patch?
At the Allianz Arena on Wednesday they looked to be on the verge of a huge upset when they took the lead through Patric Evra, which looked set to justify another deep-lying, counter-attacking performance.
But then it all went wrong. Bayern levelled immediately and ran away with it to win 3-1, with United left in their dirt and without any chance of getting back into the tie.
So do Manchester United deserve credit for their performances against Bayern?
Should David Moyes be pleased that his side lived with the European Champions so long? Or should Manchester United be hoping for more than that?
