Ronaldo proved he is the best in the world, says Howedes

The Schalke defender spoke highly of the Real Madrid attacker, while he admitted that his side were simply not good enough in their 6-1 first-leg thumping in Gelsenkirchen
Benedikt Howedes feels Cristiano Ronaldo showed why he is regarded as the best in the world in the first leg of Real Madrid's 6-1 Champions League round of 16 win over Schalke on Wednesday.

The Portugal international netted twice to take his European tally to 11 this season, while he had a hand in two more goals as the Liga leaders thrashed their opponents at the Veltins Arena to all but confirm their place in the quarter-finals.

"Ronaldo was everywhere. He proved that he is the best player in the world," Howedes told Der Westen.

"He not only scored goals, but he put in an incredible performance overall."

Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema also grabbed doubles as the Santiago Bernabeu outfit ran riot.

Klass-Jan Huntelaar scored a memorable consolation late on but the Schalke defender Howedes admits that the Bundesliga side simply lacked the quality to stop Madrid.

"We made silly mistakes but we also played against top opposition today. We simply didn’t have enough quality to compete against a team like Real Madrid, who were a class above us this evening," he continued.

"Obviously it’s an unfortunate experience. We were brave going forward, but after their lead, Real waited for us to make mistakes and then punished them clinically.

"We will try our best in the Bernabeu and try to exit with our heads held high.
