The Gunners ended up spending significantly more money on the German than they might have paid Real Madrid for the striker but Arsene Wenger is happy - which was the best deal?
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is adamant ahead of his side's Champions League clash with Napoli that signing Mesut Ozil has made up for missing out on Gonzalo Higuain earlier this summer.

The Argentine forward was courted by the Gunners for a long time but they could not meet Madrid's asking price, prompting Napoli to swoop in and capture his signature.
Higuain has since netted 10 goals in 18 games for Rafa Benitez's side and sits joint-fourth in the Serie A scoring charts, having helped the Partenopei into third place.
Though an influential figure at the Stadio San Paolo, however, has he been of greater value than Ozil? The Germany international has become instantly loved by Gunners fans and has apparently inspired the north Londoners to new heights.
The 25-year-old scored his fifth goal for Arsenal in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Everton and has already laid on eight more through assists. With Ozil on board, the Gunners are leading the rest of the Premier League by five points.
Though Ozil cost significantly more money in the end, has the German's influence in Arsenal's title charge made him stand out even with his price? Or is Higuain representative of better value - and might the Gunners be looking on longingly, knowing Nicklas Bendtner is their only recognised back-up for Olivier Giroud?
