The striker believes third place this season would represent a successful campaign for the Viola as he enjoys a resurgence in his career

Giuseppe Rossi has declared that a Champions League spot remains the key objective for Fiorentina's this season as they prepare to take on Roma.

The Viola sit fifth in Serie A after last Monday's 4-3 victory against Hellas Verona as they travel to face the second-placed Giallorossi on Sunday.

Rossi, who has scored 12 times in 14 league games this season, believes that Fiorentina ought to retain high expectations and third-place finish is by no means out of the question.

"We are just [five] points away from the Champions League places and it is not a mystery that this is one of our goals," the 26-year-old told Corriere dello Sport.

"Succeeding here would be great and, along with my team-mates, I will do everything possible. It would be a great thing for the supporters, for the passion that is felt shown for this team and for this shirt.

"My priority is to play for the team in the best possible way and to respect what [coach Vincenzo] Montella wants. Obviously it makes me happy when I score but I'm not obsessed. I'm gratified when I produce an assist too."

Rossi, who has featured 29 times for Italy and scored seven for the national side, also spoke of his enthusiasm for next summer's World Cup where the Azzurri join Uruguay, England and Costa Rica in Group D.

"The World Cup would be a dream come true, a dream I had as a child," the former Villarreal forward added.

"I'm hoping to be at my best for the World Cup. I'm confident - we are a great group and this will be our strength."

Fiorentina currently occupy fifth spot in Serie A with 27 points from 14 games.
