De Jong: I want to be a key player again

The 28-year-old AC Milan midfielder believes he is returning to his best form and is targeting an international recall ahead of next summer's World Cup in Brazil
AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong says he is almost back to his best, and is aiming to become a key player for club and country again.

The 28-year-old moved to San Siro in the summer of 2012, but a serious injury curtailed his first season with the Serie A giants.

However, since he returned to the Rossoneri first team this term and is hoping that his recent good form will see him secure a Netherlands recall.

"I feel like I'm about 20 per cent from my best," he told reporters.

"I am playing well and have also played many matches recently. Everything feels good.

"I just want to be an important member of the team again and, ultimately, to get back into the Dutch national team.

"This is an important year for any player associated with the Dutch squad because of the World Cup next summer. I hope that by February or March I will back to my very best and ready to go to Brazil."

De Jong played in Milan's 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday and felt his side deserved to take three points from the game.

"We dropped two points, and had plenty of chances to win the game," he continued.

"Despite this, we all know how difficult it is playing against Barcelona, so maybe a point is a good result."
