Champions League Betting Preview - APOEL to hold Lyon in a tight first leg
After finishing top of their group Champions League group, APOEL Nicosia have nothing to fear as they travel to Lyon in the last 16 of Europe's elite competition
By Adam Bate
Now APOEL visit Lyon in the Round of 16 and can be backed at 7/1 (8.0) with William Hill to continue the fairytale with a win in France.
Their hosts needed a 7-1 win in Zagreb to scrape though themselves. Remi Garde’s men are in the knockout stages for a ninth successive year and are 4/9 (1.44) with William Hill to open up with a win. The draw is available at 3/1 (4.0).For the goalscorer odds, Bafetimbi Gomis has to be considered after his heroics in the final group game. He bagged four against Dinamo, scoring the fastest ever Champions League hat-trick in the process, and can be backed at 9/2 (5.5) with William Hill to open the scoring in this one.
Fellow Lyon forward Lisandro Lopez is also available at the same price. As for APOEL’s players, the Brazilian journeyman Ailton scored three goals in the group stages and is being offered at 8/1 (9.0) with William Hill to grab the first goal.
In terms of what to expect, there are some key pointers from the group stages. All three of Lyon’s group games at home featured two goals or fewer. Similarly, APOEL’s three away games each had a maximum of two goals in them. The unders market appears to be the way to go and you can back under 2.5 goals at 7/10 (1.70) with William Hill. That is the best bet of the day in this one, especially with Lyon unlikely to go into this game with too much attacking intent for fear of conceding an away goal.
APOEL are well drilled and managed to pick up draws on their travels in all three of their group matches. As a result, the draw represents the value bet at 3/1 (4.0) with William Hill.
