We expected surprises, and that was exactly what happened in the final round of group fixtures on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, Chelsea, Marseille and Zenit St. Petersburg survived their matchday six do-or-die battles to qualify for the last 16 of the 2011-12 Champions League, joining AC Milan, APOEL, Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Benfica, Inter and Real Madrid in the knockout rounds.

On Wednesday, however, there were knockout blows for Ajax, Lille, Manchester United, Manchester City and Trabzonspor. At least one of those five were favoured to progress, but at the end, all of them crashed out specatularly as Napoli, CSKA Moscow, Basel and Lyon became the final four clubs to book their ticket to the last 16.

Before we look at the final group standings, here are the Champions League tie-breaker criteria that will be applied to separate teams finish level on points:

i.) higher number of points won in the group games between the teams in question
ii.) superior goal difference in the group games between the teams in question only
iii.) higher number of goals scored in the group games between the teams in question only
iv.) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group games between the teams in question only
v.) superior goal difference from all group games
vi.) higher number of goals scored from all group games
