Gareth Barry has vowed that Manchester City will do their utmost to defeat Bayern Munich on Wednesday night to keep alive their slim hopes of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League.

City need to beat the German giants and hope that Villarreal, so far without a single point in Group A, can take at least a point from Napoli, if they are to qualify.

“We can't worry too much about what's happening elsewhere,” the midfielder told the club’s official website.

“All we know is that if we win, we have a chance of going through.

“We have a job to do and we have to hope that Villarreal can do us a favour on the night.”

Barry is wary of their opponents’ quality, having noted Bayern’s impressive ascent to the top of the Bundesliga this season.

“Bayern are a class act and we're not expecting them to roll over when they play us,” the England man continued.

“We've played German sides in the past and they are very experienced and patient and we're expecting a really tough game.

“We will have our game-plan but Bayern are a very good counter-attacking side so, if we are too gung-ho, they are a team who could punish us.

“We were far from our best in Germany and one or two decisions didn’t go our way early on,” Barry added regarding the 2-0 defeat that City suffered when the teams last met in September.

“After that they were the better team and deserved their win.

“You look at their squad and it’s not hard to see why they are doing so well, but we have a fantastic squad too, and on our own ground we believe we can beat anyone.

“Will they be motivated knowing they are already through? I don’t think they will need to try and lift themselves for a game like this – but neither do we.

“Imagine how we’d feel if we didn’t put in the sort of performance we know we’re capable of and Villarreal take something from the Napoli game?

“We can’t allow that to happen, so we have to make sure we win our game and then let’s just see what happens in Spain.”

Roberto Mancini’s side are currently third in Group A after a 2-1 defeat by Napoli in the San Paolo on November 22.
