Germany international claims he was 'provoked' by the defenderBayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has revealed he was "provoked" by Inter defender Marco Materazzi at the end of their Champions League encounter on Tuesday evening.
The vice-captain claimed that he now understands how Zinedine Zidane felt, after the Italian made lewd comments towards him during the 2006 World Cup final.
The former Real Madrid and France international retaliated by headbutting the 37-year-old in the chest, and was shown a straight red that arguably changed the course of the game as Italy went on to win the World Cup on penalties.
"I can now understand Zidane," Schweinsteiger told Bild. "He already provoked me before the game, and also came on and insulted me after the game.
"Everyone knows him, as it is the same player who provokes others."
Inter registered a 3-2 victory at the Allianz Arena and progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.
