Beating Hapoel Tel Aviv was crucial...

Brace hero Michel Bastos indicated that Lyon's 3-1 victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Champions League was essential for the well-being of his side.

Les Gones have toiled badly domestically and are in the Ligue 1 relegation zone, yet Bastos struck twice in the first half – the second a ferocious drive from the edge of the box - to give OL a 2-0 cushion that ultimately proved enough for them to pick up maximum points.

“We needed this victory,” he confided to Canal+ after the game. “Currently, it's a bit tricky for us, we did our best.

“It's a very, very good win and I think it can restore our confidence and we can follow up with victories, because they are needed.”

Bastos admitted that les Gones were not always at their best in Israel, but simply winning all three points was the crucial thing.

“Sometimes when we play well, you end up losing the match, as against Saint-Etienne [at the weekend], and today we did not play the same game, but we won,” he said.

“Football, sometimes is a little weird, but the most important thing was to win. And even if we have not played badly, we can do even better. We must continue to be decisive.”

Lyon top Group B with maximum points, having also defeated Schalke.
