thumbnail Hello,

Spaniard happy with the young Argentine's contribution from the bench...

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has hailed the contribution of substitute Angel Di Maria after the Blancos' slender 1-0 victory over Auxerre on Tuesday evening.

The Argentine wideman scored the only goal of the game, which appeared to be drifting towards a scoreless draw as the Spaniards were once again largely impotent in attack.

“[Di Maria] made good use of the space and also the great work done by [Karim] Benzema to score the winning goal,” Marca quote the former Liverpool midfielder as having said after the game, referring to the Frenchman’s movement before he was substituted.

Despite a less-than-convincing performance, Alonso was not displeased with los Merengues' display.

“We were well organised against a team who were going to defend. We had the patience to take three very important points, which means we will not feel the pinch in the group,” the 28-year-old concluded.
