Oldham - Everton Preview: Hosts look to add second Merseyside scalp in FA Cup

The managerless Latics knocked out Liverpool in round four and will be looking to upset another Premier League side when they host David Moyes’ team

Caretaker Oldham manager Tony Philliskirk may be without fourth round hero Matt Smith (shoulder), as the big striker is touch-and-go ahead of the clash with Everton at Boundary Park. He has not played since the win over Liverpool, and failed to even make the bench for Saturday's 3-1 win over MK Dons.

Fellow frontman Robbie Simpson (hamstring) is in a race against time to be fit for the glamour tie, however, Connor Murray (knee), Cristian Montano (thigh) and Paul Murray (cup-tied) are all out.

Everton boss David Moyes is without Tony Hibbert (calf) and Seamus Coleman (hip).

Victor Anichebe (calf) limped out of the defeat at Manchester United last time out, and may be rested in favour of out-of-sorts Nikica Jelavic.

  • Oldham won the last meeting between these two sides when Gary McDonald's thunderbolt earned the Latics a surprise 1-0 win at Goodison Park in the FA Cup third round in 2008.
  • The Latics have just three wins in their last 12 games, however, two of those wins have come in the last three games.
  • The Boundary Park club are currently in the League One relegation zone, with 30 points from 31 games.
  • Everton have not beaten Oldham in the FA Cup since 1912. The two sides have met 40 times altogether, and have 14 victories each.
  • The Toffees are unbeaten in their last seven away ties in the FA Cup.
  • David Moyes (right) has seen his team score seven goals in this season's competition, with all the strikes coming from different players.

Players to watch

J. Baxter

Position: Attacker

The former Everton man will be eager to show his former employers what he can do after the 20-year-old rejected a new contract at Goodison over the summer in a bid to make a mark in the game elsewhere. After trials at several clubs, Baxter found his feet at League One Oldham, and he has not looked back since, with the attacking midfielder earning praise for his good performances in an otherwise struggling side. His 11 goals this season mean Everton will need to be wary of his tricky dribbling and eye for goal throughout Saturday night's tie.

L. Osman

Position: Midfielder

Games: 0

The central midfielder does not like to hog the limelight at Goodison Park, and while the likes of Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini garner all the plaudits, 31-year-old Osman goes about his business in a quiet and efficient manner. After recently earning his first England cap, the Toffees veteran has seen his stock rise, and recognition of his role in the engine room of David Moyes’ midfield praised. His job is a crucial one, with his main task to break-up opposition attacks, and move the ball onto more creative players in his own team.

Editor's Prediction

Oldham's win over Liverpool in the previous round will give them great confidence, but few would bet on them being able to pull off another shock when they host Everton on Saturday evening. The Latics have performed poorly in the league, and sacked previous manager Paul Dickov despite their surprise win in the last round. And whilst the cup tie offers them a one-off chance to over-perform, the Toffees should have too much quality for their lower-league opponents. David Moyes will be targeting another trip to Wembley after missing out to rivals Liverpool in the cup semi-final last season, and he will expect his side to record victory at Boundary Park to move a step closer to that goal.
