The Blue Square South League team were just one of 14 non-league teams to advance to the second round draw after Saturday's games, with Swindon Town, who were cruelly dumped out of the Capital One Cup by Aston Villa in midweek, also eliminated at the hands of a team from outside England's top four leagues in Macclesfield.
Harrogate Town secured a second-round berth, Chib Chilaka's drive in the 20th minute proving enough to see off League Two's Torquay United.
Hereford, who were relegated from league football last season, overcame local rivals Shrewsbury 3-2, with Ryan Bowman the two-goal hero.
Walsall of League One required a George Bowerman goal in the 87th minute to rescue a draw against Lincoln City, while Ben Williamson also struck late for Port Vale to see them past Blue Square Premier high-fliers, Forest Green.
The biggest result of the day saw Chesterfield, currently sitting in mid-table in League Two, thrash League One strugglers Hartlepool United 6-1 with seven different scorers hitting the game's seven goals.
League One giants Sheffield United avoided a potential banana skin away to Bristol Rovers, goals from Nick Blackman and Chris Porter enough to cancel out David Clarkson's opener.
