Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson admits Blackpool were a class above his side after being knocked out of the FA Cup, losing 3-0 to the Seasiders at Hillsborough.

Matt Phillips opened the scoring inside 10 minutes with a bobbled effort that Wednesday keeper Stephen Bywater could not react quickly enough to, before the hosts were once again punished for slack defending as Lomana LuaLua curled in from distance and Ludovic Sylvestre added a third after the break.

The former Bolton boss believes the Lancashire side thoroughly outplayed his team and admitted they were outclassed by the Championship outfit.

Megson told reporters: “I don’t think it’s as simplistic as that, to tell you the truth. We had a great opportunity in the first few minutes and if that goes in, I’m saying the result would have been different, but I think our performance certainly would.

“They took their goals brilliantly, but I also thought they looked a class act at times, the way they kept the ball, they kept it with a purpose. They had the penetration through [Lomana] LuaLua and also from the wide players.

“When we were keeping it, at times it looked a little bit laboured to a point that we were passing it, but not going anywhere and it’s a bit disappointing from that point of view.”

With such a futile performance, Megson struggled to take any positives from the game and concedes it is a demanding task to deal with the strains of being in several competitions at once.

Asked if he was pleased with anything from his side, he replied: “Not particularly. Everything in this football club points to being successful in the league and that’s what we’ve got to try and do and we’re not strong [enough] to fight on all fronts of getting a good result against Yeovil and a good result against Blackpool, and then hopefully going down to Exeter and getting a good result.

“We were getting booed because we were passing square and backwards and Blackpool didn’t even have to try and get the ball back because they could just sit behind and the job had already been done.”
