Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray has revealed that midfielder Barry Robson threw his man of the match bottle of champagne into the dressing bin following his topsy-turvy display in his side's FA Cup draw with Sunderland.

Mowbray had seen Robson put his side in command against their Premier League opponents with a stunning volley before his misplaced pass paved the way for Fraizer Campbell’s equaliser but the Boro boss was full of praise for the Scottish international.

“Barry Robson has come in and thrown his man-of-the-match champagne in the bin,” Mowbray told reporters after the match.

“Barry has quality but he also has the heart of a lion, he scored a great goal and he doesn’t need to apologise for anything because I know that he will drive us on this season.

“He is a very emotional boy and yet he epitomises the spirit required you need at a club as we move on, particularly in the Championship where you have to fight your corner in every game and he leads from the front in that respect. Plus he has a great left foot as he showed against Hull a few weeks ago with a 35-yard goal.”

“We were pleased with the effort but the dressing room is slightly disappointed we didn’t come through the tie with a victory. They showed great spirit despite the nature of Sunderland’s equaliser. We handed it on a plate to them and we could have lost heart but we pushed on and looked if anything that we could get a winner.”

With a replay looming on Tuesday, February 7th, Mowbray is hoping that the FA Cup can bolster the Championship club’s promotion drive.

“It was a decent match but we have generally found it more difficult to get results away from home than at the Riverside but I would like to think the people of Teesside would come out in greater numbers than they do in the league for the replay,” Mowbray added.

“Hopefully it will capture the imagination and make the difference against one of the form sides of the Premier League who beat Manchester City here. That puts things into perspective and we should get credit for what we have done. We are looking forward to the replay.

“The target for our club is to get back to competing with Sunderland and Newcastle on a weekly basis in the Premier League. For me I hope the people of Teesside get behind the team and that there is a big crowd and then another against We need to create some momentum as we go into the run-in this season. We need to get back to winning ways.”
