Emotional Bellamy hails 'phenomenal' Cardiff promotion

The Welsh outfit secured a return to England's top flight for the first time in 51 years following a 0-0 draw with Charlton, and the veteran striker was delighted to be part of it
Craig Bellamy described Cardiff's promotion to the Premier League as "phenomenal" on an emotional evening for the veteran striker.

A goalless draw with Charlton was enough to secure the Bluebirds' passage to the top flight for the first time since 1962 - an achievement that brought Cardiff-born Bellamy to his knees at the final whistle.

The 33-year-old returned to his hometown club in the summer, making no secret of his ambition to lead them back into England's top tier after a number of recent failings in the playoffs

"It's just been a tough season, this Championship's just so tough," Bellamy told BBC Sport. "To be on top, to be one of the two teams promoted [automatically], it's just such an achievement for us."

"I did [cry after the game], it's been a tough year. To spend it with the people and to see them here today and to see my dad and my son, these are one-offs.

"You probably won't be able to re-create this or get better than this, so I wanted to soak it up and enjoy every second of it. We're going to be in the Premier League. What this is going to do next year to the club, to the city, it's just going to be phenomenal. It's just immense.

"The Premier League was the one we all wanted and to play a small part in it as a player myself, it's just an honour and something that will live for me for a number of years.

"I don't know if I'll get in the team next year. We don't know who we're going to bring in, or what type of players. It's a long way down the road, but I hope to see my career out here at Cardiff."

Bellamy will lock horns with a number of former clubs next season, and ex-Manchester City team-mate Vincent Kompany was one of the first to toast Cardiff's promotion, tweeting: "Congratulations to my friend Bellamy for achieving promotion and to the people of Cardiff!"
