Blackburn's dangerous slide continued as a 3-2 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday left them without a win in 10 games and pushed them into the relegation zone. A Jordan Rhodes penalty put Rovers ahead after 12 minutes but Jermaine Johnson and Leroy Lita hit back to give the Owls the lead. Scott Dann equalised on 71 minutes but a 25-yard stunner from Johnson gave Wednesday all three points and lifted them out of the danger zone at Blackburn's expense.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace squandered yet more points after a 0-0 draw with Barnsley, though the result ended their run of three straight defeats. There were better fortunes for Steve Bruce's Hull, though, who closed the gap on Malky McKay's Cardiff to just five points with the Bluebirds drawing 0-0 with Watford in the evening fixture.

Other home winners were Charlton, Burnley and Bolton, while there were draws between Nottingham Forest and Blackpool, Brighton and Leicester and Birmingham and Millwall. Mick McCarthy's Ipswich were the only visiting team to claim three points, with a 1-0 win at Derby pushing them up to 14th in the table.

Doncaster and Bournemouth were the big winners as they edged closer to automatic promotion with wins over Tranmere and Doncaster. A Rob Jones winner saw Rovers stay top, while a convincing 3-1 win over Notts County kept Bournemouth just two points behind the league leaders.

Meanwhile, Preston and Colchester moved closer to safety with home wins over Scunthorpe and Leyton Orient. The pressure is now on Oldham, Scunthorpe, Portsmouth and Bury - none of whom could muster a win to ease their relegation troubles.

There was a home win for Hartlepool in the battle of the bottom, however, who beat Bury 2-0 to leapfrog them into second bottom - but the result still leaves them five points from safety with three games remaining.

Elsewhere, third-placed Yeovil beat Shrewsbury 2-1 while Walsall played out a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United, as did Coventry with Brentford and MK Dons with Crawley.

Gillingham became the first side in the Football League to seal promotion with a 1-0 win over lowly Torquay. Danny Kedwell was the hero after scoring a 48th-minute winner to send his side eight points clear of Port Vale at the top of the table.

Elsewhere, Capital One Cup finalists Bradford kept their promotion hopes alive with a narrow 1-0 win over third-placed Northampton. The result leaves the Bantams two points off the play-offs with one game in hand.

Also victorious were Rochdale, who triumped 3-0 at Fleetwood, and Dagenham and Redbridge, who came away from Exeter with a 1-0 win.

At the foot of the table, York gained a valuable point against Accrington, though they remain second from bottom, while Accrington are not far above in 20th.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon and Barnet both lost but a priceless 2-0 win for Plymouth over Chesterfield lifts them to 18th place. In the day's other two clashes, Wycombe won at Oxford United, while Morecambe shocked high-flying Rotherham with a 2-1 win.
