Watford edged closer to Premier League football with a 1-0 win over promotion rivals Hull City.
Troy Deeney scored the only goal of the game with a curling effort, and could have extended that advantage if not for some fine saves from Hull keeper David Stockdale.
One goal proved to be enough for Zola's men to win the match, though they are still a point shy of the second-placed Tigers.
Elsewhere Bolton kept their play-off hopes alive with a 1-0 triumph over struggling Huddersfield.
The Trotters scored early in the second half, as midfielder Chris Eagles beat Terriers keeper Alex Smithies. The win keeps Dougie Freedman's men in with a small chance of an instant return to the top flight. The Lancashire club are just four points outside the top six, while Huddersfield remain in the drop zone.
Brighton are another side in play-off contention, and although the Seagulls maintained their unbeaten record in 2013, they could not break down a determined Charlton side despite striking the woodwork twice through Vicente and Gordon Greer.
Middlesbrough were also left to settle for a point against relegation strugglers Peterborough. The Teesiders' hopes of promotion now look to be fading, as Tony Mowbray's men now sit six points shy of the play-offs. However, the stalemate keeps Darren Ferguson's men just a single point adrift of achieving their goal of Championship safety.
