Extra Time: Cheeky Burnley fan shortlisted for Blackburn job

The lifelong Clarets fan received confirmation from Venky's global adviser Shebby Singh that he is to be interviewed for the position despite only applying as a joke
Blackburn Rovers’ next boss might just be a die-hard Burnley fan who applied for the position as a joke.

James McDonagh, a lifelong fan of Rovers’ rivals, filed his application after the Championship side fired Michael Appleton, the third manager to receive the boot from much-maligned owners Venky’s this year.

The 30-year-old customer services manager was shocked to be told he was shortlisted for the position after including his tenure as boss of a Sunday league team and love of the Football Manager video game series as relevant experience.

McDonagh told the Sun: “I wasn’t expecting to get shortlisted but Blackburn’s owners are known for their barmy decisions.

“They’re a bit of a joke club at the minute and I thought I could probably do better than their last few appointments.”

Shebby Singh, global adviser of Venky’s, is overseeing the search for Rovers' next manager and replied to McDonagh's application.

The message read: “Having your checked your application and your credentials from your CV, we would like to shortlist you for the vacancy. We formally invite you to interview.”
