In the Championship, Blackburn's good start to the season continued as they picked up a 2-1 home win over Barnsley, but it was not plain-sailing as they were forced to come from behind and relied on an 85th minute goal from Nuno Gomes to secure the three points.

Blackpool are still hard on the heels of Steve Kean's side after a resounding 4-1 win against Middlesbrough, with Nathan Delfouneso grabbing a double for the hosts, while both Hull and Brighton also moved up to 13 points with wins over Leeds and Watford respectively.

At the other end of the table, Peterborough are still without a point after six matches with Bristol City the latest side to get the better of them at London Road, with a Sam Baldock double earning the points for the visitors.

Crystal Palace moved up a couple of places after picking up a point at home to Nottingham Forest as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw, a result that sees the Reds occupying the last play-off place on ten points.

League One had quite the offering of goals on Tuesday evening, but the biggest winners on the night were Preston North End as they hammered Hartlepool 5-0 at home.

Scott Laird bagged two in the final five minutes to put the icing on the cake for Preston and they now sit in the play-offs, while humbled Hartlepool sit just above the bottom four, level on points with Portsmouth and Scunthorpe.

Pompey slumped to another defeat, this time 2-1 to Swindon at Fratton Park with Lubomir Michalik's late goal not enough for the hosts, while Scunthorpe settled for a 1-1 draw at Oldham, with Matt Derbyshire scoring again for his new side.

Leyton Orient picked up a rather emphatic victory, easing to a 4-1 win over Yeovil Town with Kevin Lisbie rounding it off with 10 minutes to go, while Shrewsbury Town won by the same scoreline against visiting Coventry, whose plight continues.

Thanks to a 1-0 home win against Southend, Gillingham remain three points clear at the top of League Two with 19 points, but it was second-place Port Vale who managed the result of the evening as they romped to a 5-2 win away to Fleetwood Town.

Fleetwood themselves are still in fourth place, but a Louis Dodds-inspired Vale side were too much for them as the striker scored twice, and Accrington Stanley - also in the play-off places - lost as well, falling 4-3 on the road against Chesterfield, Jack Lester netting twice for them.

Barnet still prop up the rest of the teams with just the one point after losing yet again, this time to Aldershot, while Rochdale came from 2-1 down against Rotherham with 15 minutes to go to win 3-2 as Kevin McIntyre grabbed the winner 10 minutes from time.

Bradford capitalised on Fleetwood's defeat as they moved level with the newly-promoted side thanks to a 3-1 home win against Morecambe.
