The troubled 19-year-old claimed he was merely responding to racist abuse on the social networking site, but this explanation has not been deemed sufficient to avoid a reprimand

West Ham midfielder Ravel Morrison has been charged by the Football Association over allegedly making homophobic comments on Twitter.

The 19-year-old, who arrived at Upton Park from Manchester United on deadline day of the January transfer window, is accused of using homophobic language on the social networking site when responding to another user.

Morrison told the FA his outburst was prompted by racist abuse from individuals he classified as United fans disgruntled at his decision to leave the club, but it now appears this explanation has not been considered sufficient to avoid a charge.

A statement on the FA's website said: "West Ham United’s Ravel Morrison has been charged under FA Rule E3 for use of abusive and/or insulting words including a reference to a person’s sexual orientation."

He has until 16:00GMT on February 17 to respond to the charge.
