| CARDIFF CITY | 1-3 | BLACKPOOL |
West Ham went four points clear at the top of the table as they overcame local rivals Millwall 2-1 in Saturday’s early kick-off, despite having captain Kevin Nolan sent off inside 10 minutes for a lunging tackle. A delightful equaliser from Liam Trotter cancelled out Carlton Cole’s first-half header before the Hammers took the points through Winston Reid, who scored with a 20-yard effort into an open goal.
The leaders saw their advantage in the table extended as second-placed Southampton played out a 0-0 draw at Birmingham, Danny Fox seeing red for the visitors, while fellow promotion hopefuls Cardiff were beaten 3-1 at home by Blackpool thanks to two late strikes from highly-rated winger Matt Phillips, as Ian Holloway’s men moved fourth.
Middlesbrough slipped to sixth after a 0-0 stalemate with Crystal Palace while Brighton and Leeds closed in on the playoff positions with 1-0 and 3-0 wins over Leicester City and Bristol City respectively, the latter playing their first match since sacking manager Simon Grayson.
Burnley came from behind through Jay Rodriguez’s fine solo goal to draw 1-1 with Peterborough, while Hull and Reading had their away matches at Portsmouth and Doncaster postponed due to frozen pitches.
Snowy conditions also prevented Derby – Nottingham Forest from going ahead, with Forest still in shock after the death of owner Nigel Doughty on Saturday. Steve Cotterill’s side were spared being pushed to the bottom of the table as last-placed Coventry were undone in injury-time by Michael Chopra’s winner for Ipswich in a pulsating 3-2 away victory.
| LEAGUE ONE |
| CARLISLE | 2-1 | CHESTERFIELD | SHEFF WEDNESDAY |
2-1 | YEOVIL TOWN |
| HUDDERSFIELD | 2-1 | MK DONS |
WYCOMBE |
2-1 | TRANMERE |
There were only four fixtures in League One over the weekend as the cold snap across the UK caused six games to be called off due to frozen pitches.
Huddersfield were held to a 1-1 draw by promotion rivals MK Dons as Stephen Gleeson's free kick cancelled out Jamie McCombe's header just before the interval.
Sheffield Wednesday capitalised on Lee Clarke's side being held to a point by coming from behind to beat Yeovil, with goals coming from Jermaine and Reda Johnson in a 2-1 win.
Carlisle moved level on points with Stevenage and now sit outside the playoff places on goal difference after Francois Zoko scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over bottom-placed Chesterfield.
Wycombe were able to move out of the bottom four with a victory over Tranmere, as Matty Wichelow and Gareth Ainsworth strikes overturned Adam McGurk's early opener.
Earlier in the week, league leaders Charlton drew 1-1 with Bury, while MK Dons and Sheffield Wednesday also played out a draw, and Notts County climbed up the table with a 1-0 win over Walsall thanks to a goal from Lee Hughes after three minutes.
| LEAGUE TWO |
| PLYMOUTH | 2-2 | SOUTHEND |
There was only one game in League Two over the weekend but it turned out to be an absolute cracker as Plymouth came from behind in the dying stages to draw with Paul Sturrock's Southend at Home Park.
Michael Timlin and David Martin had put the visitors comfortably ahead in the first half but two strikes in the last five minutes saved Carl Fletcher's side, who remain in the relegation zone, a single point behind Dagenham & Redbridge.
