David James insists he has not called time on his England career despite carrying out a surprise move to Championship side Bristol City.

The goalkeeper signed a one-year deal with City, with the option of extending it by another year, after leaving Portsmouth.

James, who turns 40 on Sunday, now faces the possibility of falling down England’s pecking order, particularly since manager Fabio Capello highlighted the need to bring in younger faces in preparation for Euro 2012.

However James, who played in all but one of England’s World Cup 2010 games in South Africa, believes he can still be a part of Capello’s plans.

"I'll never retire from England and hopefully my performances at Bristol City will keep me on the radar," James told Bristol City’s club website.

"I enjoyed the World Cup to an extent but obviously the results and the outcome were disappointing. I don't know what the future holds, and it was the same before the World Cup to be honest."

James turned down moves to Celtic and Sunderland to sign for the Championship club and says his new side have the right mindset to reach the Premier League.

"The club is ambitious and that's what I am. The south-west has not had a club in the Premier League and that needs to change."

City’s chairman, Steve Lansdown, was pleased with his latest acquisition and highlighted that the club need to continue bringing in players of James’ calibre.

Lansdown said: "I'm delighted David James has agreed to sign. My ambition is for this football club to play at the highest level - the Premier League - and in the best surroundings, hence the work on the training ground and new stadium.

"We need good quality players to make that happen and that's why I'm thrilled that David [James] has agreed to come on board."

Greg Stobart reports from Old Trafford: “The game has settled into a pattern now and, to be honest, it’s not particularly exciting. Both teams are lacking cutting edge in the final third - although Paul Scholes missed a superb chance to put United ahead after a flowing move. As the United fans continue to taunt Suarez - chants I’m sure Kenny Dalglish will accept as ‘a bit of banter’ - the Liverpool manager is deep in conversation with his assistant Steve Clarke. Judging from their hand gestures, they seem to be talking about Stewart Downing, who has been virtually anonymous so far on Liverpool’s left side.”

Ooft! Best chance of the game so far goes to Manchester United. Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck are all involved as Ryan Giggs is found in space on the left of the Liverpool area. The Welshman’s inch-perfect cross then meets the head of Scholes, who does well to arrive unmarked inside the box around eight yards out, but he can only power his header straight at Pepe Reina. Great link-up play from United.

Jordan Henderson gets himself in a great shooting opportunity on the edge of the Manchester United area after combining well with Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, but the Liverpool midfielder’s touch takes a nick off a defender and the chance goes begging.

As much as I would like to continue describing the action on the pitch, the handshake situation is unavoidable. Replays show that Rio Ferdinand snubbed Luis Suarez, while it’s being mentioned on Twitter that police have had to confiscate Red Issue fanzines from outside the ground because of a rather disgusting back page.
