Middlesbrough have completed the free transfer signing of Rangers' all time Scottish Premier League top scorer Kris Boyd on a two-year contract.

Boyd, 26, had been chased by a number of sides across Europe after he let his contract run down this summer. CSKA Moscow, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Newcastle United, Trabzonspor and Kayserispor had all been linked with the striker who grabbed a record 164 goals in the Scottish top flight.

The player - who has successfully completed a medical with The Championship outfit - was top scorer in each of the five seasons he spent at Ibrox after signing from Kilmarnock in January 2006. Manager Gordon Strachan will be keen for Boyd to repeat these heroics and fire 'Boro to the Premier League after relegation at the end of the 2008/09 season.

Speaking to the Evening Gazette, Boyd targeted The Championship title. He said: “Middlesbrough are a huge club and I just want to get into pre-season training as quickly as possible.

“I've met Gordon and know a number of the players such as Barry Robson, Scott McDonald and Lee Miller.

“It'll be good to have those guys around me.

“The manager is assembling a good squad and we are aiming for promotion back to the Premiership. There will be a pressure to deliver on that front.

“I know how good it feels to win a title. I've won them with Rangers and I want that feeling with Middlesbrough this season.”

He added: “Shota [Arveladze] made me an exceptional offer [to join Kayserispor] and I thank him and his club for that.

“If I only had money on my mind I would have gone there but that's not what I'm about.

“I have a family to consider and taking everything into account Middlesbrough is the club where I want to be.”
