The centre-back has long been a target for the Red Devils but Jurgen Klopp issues a statement of intent by handing the defender the armband ahead of the new season

Mats Hummels has been named Borussia Dortmund captain as the club attempt to put an end any chance of him joining Manchester United.

The 25-year-old has been a target for Louis van Gaal ever since the Dutchman took charge at Old Trafford and, after Barcelona beat the Red Devils to the signing of Thomas Vermaelen, his interest could increase.

Hummels was not involved as Jurgen Klopp's side fell to a shock 4-0 friendly defeat by Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, just three days before they face Bayern Munich in the German Supercup, but Dortmund attempted to lift some of the post-match gloom by announcing the news of his appointment.

"Mats Hummels will be the new captain of Borussia Dortmund," the club declared on Twitter. "Marco Reus and Roman Weidenfeller will be the alternatives."

Sebastian Kehl had previously been BVB's leader but his advancing years and reduced playing time saw the midfielder step down from the role.

In a recent statement, he said: "This important task has filled me with fun and pride. It makes sense now to pass the baton for I have now the opportunity to give successor advice and practical help and support with the experience [I have] gained.

"I would have liked to have complete this task but now the time is right."
