Van Gaal will lead Manchester United to the top four, say Goal readers

Almost half of those who voted in our poll believe the Dutchman will oversee a return to Champions League football, while a significant minority are backing him to win the title

Louis van Gaal will at least guide Manchester United back into the top four of the Premier League this season, according to the majority of Goal readers who voted in our poll.

Van Gaal arrives at Old Trafford having just led a limited Netherlands team to a World Cup semi-final and takes over a squad which already boasts new signings Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, with more significant arrivals possible.

And almost half of the readers who voted in our poll (48.7 per cent) are confident the celebrated Dutchman will oversee a return to Champions League football for the Red Devils.

Some 14.9% believe he will do even better and lead United to a record 21st league title in his first season at the club.

Another 12.6% think Van Gaal will have to settle for Europa League qualification, while 12.5% are backing United to repeat their annus horribilis under David Moyes and miss out on Europe altogether.

An optimistic 5.9% of voters believe the Dutchman will secure a league and cup double in his first season in England, while 5.3% are backing him to get his hands on either the FA Cup or Capital One Cup.
