However, Wilshere returned to match action to feature in the Gunners' final game of the season and the FA Cup final victory over Hull City on May 17 - and Hodgson has thanked Wenger for his handling of the situation.
"I was never worried about Jack," he told reporters.
"He's paid tribute to Arsene Wenger in the week, and I would also like to pay my tribute there.
"Arsene is a well balanced and intelligent coach and he realises that to Jack this World Cup represents an opportunity, something which Jack really wanted to do.
